⭐️⭐️⭐️ Bustling Hub with Local Flavor — But Best to Visit During Daylight Hours As a tourist exploring East London, I visited the area around Gillwell Mall, located in the heart of the CBD. It's a lively, fast-paced urban zone filled with street vendors, public taxis (minibus taxis), informal markets, and several popular local stores. The area has a raw, authentic energy that gives you a genuine glimpse into local life. 🛍 Shops & Markets Nearby: Gillwell Taxi Retail Mall is the main attraction — with stores like Boxer Superstore, Clicks, and Pep for essentials and groceries. The street market stalls outside offer clothing, fresh produce, electronics, and more — all at bargain prices. If you enjoy market shopping and haggling, you’ll find this part of East London quite engaging. Nearby retail outlets include Shoprite, Jet, Ackermans, and local fast food spots. Taxis to Mdantsane and other surrounding areas are easily accessible from this transport hub. 🧼 Cleanliness & Hygiene: The streets can get quite crowded and untidy, especially in the late afternoon when vendors are closing up. There’s visible litter on the ground and a lack of consistent waste management in the public areas. Don’t expect a polished shopping experience — this is a busy inner-city district. ⚠️ Safety After 6 PM: This area is not recommended for tourists after dark, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the city. Once the sun sets (after 6 PM), many shops begin closing, and the crowds thin out, making the environment feel more vulnerable. While there is foot traffic and taxis still running, petty theft and opportunistic crimes can occur. Stay alert, avoid using your phone in public, and travel in groups if possible. 🚶‍♂️ Tips for Tourists: Visit during daylight (preferably before 5 PM) for the safest and most vibrant experience. Keep your valuables out of sight and avoid flashy clothing or jewelry. Bring cash in small denominations if you plan to shop from vendors. It’s not a place for leisurely strolling — be purposeful and aware of your surroundings. --- 🎯 Final Thoughts: If you’re looking for a local shopping and cultural experience in East London, this area near Gillwell Mall delivers — just with a few important precautions. It’s not glamorous, but it’s real and lively. Think of it as a street-smart adventure rather than a tourist hotspot. 📸 Photo Tip: The contrast of the busy market scene under a calm sunset sky offers unique photo opportunities — just be discreet with your camera or phone.

Needs a wash, some Tender Loving Care ... keep fixing small things which break, wash the carpark floor, clean up.

It's a big mall, with a lot of favorite shops. Very clean and open, but the lay-out was done poorly. We parked at where we thought Pick'nPay would be and ended up having to walk to the other side, then asked directions agàìn, needed to take the escalator down, walk all the way to the other side...then walk all the way back, down with escalator...
